After 17 incredible days the Olympic games are over.....and I miss it. I can not believe that I am even admitting to that because I was a real naysayer right from the day we won the Olympic bid. All the usual anti-Olympic stuff - and mostly about money that could have been better spent on other things such as health care, the homeless, the hungry and on it goes. Of course, these are very valid concerns but money alone is not going to be the cure all. What we gained from these Olympics is not something that money can buy. The excitement and enthusiasm could be felt in the air and we have come away full of Olympic spirit and soaring Canadian pride. At the last moment people like me stepped up to the plate and basked in the glory of being alive and living in the most beautiful city in the world. I got tears in my eyes watching our athletes putting themselves out there with every ounce of energy they could muster. I still tingle all over every time I hear "I Believe" being sung on the radio and am so glad that I participated, in my own small way, in the most incredible experience ever to happen to Vancouver.

And at the end of the day, we have a real bonus. All the money spent on infrastructure was long overdue and thanks to the Olympics we made some real strides in rapid transit.

You did it Canada!!

February 16th, 2010

I am sure all Canadians know the name "Gretzky". But imagine our surprise when the Great One's father walked through our doors. Of course, he was in Vancouver to take part in the Torch relay for the Olympics. But who would have guessed that he has family in our area and decided to drop by to help bottle a batch of wine. A true gentleman, he visited with customers and staff alike, posed for pictures and regaled everyone with his stories and trivia.

Walter has had many challenges in his life but if anything they have humbled him and made him the gentleman he is today. Thank you Walter for dropping in and bringing all of us at Coastal Winemakers a huge helping of Olympic spirit and Canadian pride!
